A neural network approach for the optimisation of watershed management

چکیده
Managing a catchment for drinking water supply with a high proportion of agricultural land use is a difficult task if one has to maintain a reasonable balance between water quality demand and consequent restrictions for the farming industry. In this paper, we present a neural net-based method for finding good approximations to solutions of this problem. This method is capable of ‘inverting’ a hydrological model to identify land use scenarios that match best the leaching criteria defined for establishing a certain water quality level in the stream. The method not only allows simulation land use scenarios like hydrologic models do, but can search systematically for land use scenarios that fulfill specified criteria without worrying about the complexity of combinatorial optimisation. 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Performance comparison of land change modeling techniques for land use projection of arid watersheds
The change of land use/land cover has been known as an imperative force in environmental alteration, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This research was mainly aimed to assess the validity of two major types of land change modeling techniques via a three dimensional approach in Birjand urban watershed located in an arid climatic region of Iran. Thus, a Markovian approach based on two suit...
متن کاملInvestigating of Relationship Between Hydro-geomorphological Characteristics of the Watershed Basin and Interflows Using Artificial Neural Network Approach (Case Study: Kerman's Subsurface Dams)
Due to the increasing need for water and the lack of access to its sources, it is essential to maintain and use groundwater resources. So, identifying and exploiting these resources has particular importance. Investigating interflows requires geo-electric and geotechnical studies, both of which require a lot of time and cost. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a method or model that can mini...
متن کاملStream Flow Prediction in Flood Plain by Using Artificial Neural Network (Case Study: Sepidroud Watershed)
In order to determine hydrological behavior and water management of Sepidroud River (North of Iran-Guilan) the present study has focused on stream flow prediction by using artificial neural network. Ten years observed inflow data (2000-2009) of Sepidroud River were selected; then these data have been forecasted by using neural network. Finally, predicted results are compared to the observed dat...
متن کاملComparison of Efficiency for Hydrological Models (AWBM & SimHyd) and Neural Network (MLP & RBF) in Rainfall–Runoff Simulation (Case study: Bar Aryeh Watershed -Neyshabur)
For suitable programming and management of water resources, access to perfect information from the discharge at the watershed outlet is essential. In most watersheds, the hydrometric station is not available; then, different models are used to simulate the discharge within watersheds without data. The selection of preferred model for rainfall- runoff simulation depends to the purpose of modelin...
متن کاملApplication of Artificial Neural Network in Study Phenomenon of Landslide and Risk Modeling using Geographic Information System (GIS), Case Study: Alamoot Rood Watershed
One of the natural disasters that occurs in abundance in Iran, due to the geological structure, morphological and seismic conditions, and damages the lives and property of people is a landslide. Roodbar Alamoot watershed in the east of Qazvin province is a mountainous region with a high potential for occurrence of landslides. Because of their active status, there is also a growing trend of...
متن کاملAssessment the Performance of Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Network Systems for Regional Flood Frequency Analysis (A Case Study: Namak Lake Watershed)
Flood discharge estimation with different return periods is one of important factors for water structures design and installation. On the other hand, a lot of rivers existing in Iran watersheds have no complete and accurate hydrometric data. In these cases, one of the suitable solutions to estimate peak discharges with different return periods is the regional flood analysis. In this research, 5...
